  There is an obvious drawback - burying of software.
  When company decides that no longer needs the soft, it may put it aside.
  You cannot revive, reuse, redevelop the things you spent the best part of your life ...
  The employer's company becomes the cemetery of the code ...
  I have many of such cemeteries ... I don't complain ... they paid me well ... 

  The fun side is that the Company may have no idea what this software can do, its possibilies, and
  advancement. The Company simply don't understand what it is. 
  There is no expiration date. It is forever.
  
  Long lived Open Source! ...
